NATIONAL PARK
Mikumi is the 4th largest National
Park in Tanzania Covering an area of 3230 sq km, the park was
gazetted in 1964. The park shares one ecosystem with Selous, making
animals such as zebras elephants, and buffalos migrate to and from
the northern part of the reserve into the park.
Location:
Mikumi National Park is located 283km (about 175 miles) west of Dar
es Salaam and 107km (67 miles) from Morogoro town on the highway
from Dar es Salaam.
Climate:
Mikumi has a bi-modal rain season, characterized by short rains in
October to early November, followed by long rains lasting for five/
six months, although the rainfall pattern is very unpredictable.
However, there is always a definite dry period in January and
February.
Best time:
The best time to visit the park is during the dry season. However,
the northern part of the park is accessible throughout the year.
Accessibility: The park is easily
accessible both by road and by air. The airstrip is located at
Kikoboga near the park headquarters. The highway from Dar es Salaam
to Iringa makes the park easily and comfortably reached by vehicles
from the nearest small town of Mikumi, Iringa, Morogoro municipality
and the city of Dar es Salaam.
What to do in Mikumi National Park:
The main activity is game viewing in various tourist circuits within
the park. Walking safari is also done in Mikumi in the designated
walking trails , his activity is done only in the dry season and for
safety purposes it is strictly for Adults
